
Broken Hill is the major service centre for the western New South Wales region, with all the facilities, services and attractions of a medium-sized city. The weather is warm to hot in summer, with temperatures often rising to over 38°C, with a summer average of about 32°C. Winters are mild, with daily temperatures averaging around 16°C. Average monthly rainfall is about 20mm. Although located in New South Wales, Broken Hill and nearby Silverton operate on Central Standard Time (CST) in line with South Australia and the Northern Territory.
Broken Hill is easily accessible by road from Mildura, Wentworth, Adelaide and Sydney, by bus from Adelaide, Port Augusta and Mildura, and by train from Sydney and Adelaide (Great Southern Railways Indian Pacific). For venturing into the more remote country around Broken Hill, a 4WD is recommended.
The Broken Hill region is home to a rich array of natural and man-made wonders, including magnificent sunrises and sunsets, ample wildlife including wildflowers and red kangaroos, minerals such as opal, silver and crystals, ancient aboriginal meeting places, and a thriving local art and sculpture scene.
