Outback Tours Tanami TrackThe Tanami Track crosses one of Australia's great deserts - The Tanami Desert - in a roughly north-west/south-east direction, joining Alice Springs in Central Australia with Halls Creek in the East Kimberley region. Although the Tanami Track crosses remote outback country, it is today a relatively easy route for 4WD travellers thanks to greater use and better maintenance of the track due to mining activities. Gold is abundant in the region and several major mines now operate along the track following the successful negotiation of agreements with the Warlpiri and other traditional Aboriginal owners. The Tanami and Granites Mines are located just off the Tanami Track and are among the largest gold mines in Australia. The mines are likely to remain in operation for many years to come, so use of the Tanami Track as the major mining service route will continue to benefit 4WD tourists by ensuring that the track is well maintained, that fuel is available and that emergency help and facilities are nearby. Specific highlights are few, the Tanami Desert itself being the prime attraction of interest. The Rabbit Flat roadhouse is one interesting outpost, claiming to be "the most remote roadhouse in Australia". The Tanami Track serves as a good "shortcut" from the Central Australia to the Kimberley, the only alternative being to take the Stuart Highway north to Dunmarra then the Buchanan and Duncan Highways to the west. Good quality aboriginal dot paintings produced in surrounding communities such as Yuendumu, Mt Allen and Papunya on sale in the gallery at Tilmouth Well for tourists to view and/or purchase. | OUTBACK GALLERYHundreds of Great Outback Photos!
